This is a glimpse of an afternoon in Herrang. People are hanging out, hooking up, waiting for class to end and the next class to begin. In this area of the camp you can find an ice cream parlor, an Internet café and some of the best jazz in the world wafting through the air.

Lot’s of crawfish stories float around Herrang. The crawfish has such mythical proportions you’d think, I don’t know, maybe it’s an aphrodisiac. I can’t confirm or deny that theory but crawfish parties are a bonding experience. Love thy crawfish, love thy neighbor.

During the party a new record was set, and documented in this video, for the number of people jammed into a car—it was well over 20 people and it was not a big car. The beloved Carling Family Band performed and provided the vibes for us to boogie into the night.

25-Year Anniversary Celebration

Summer 2007 marked the 25th year of the Herrang Dance Camp. The town of Herrang was invited to the reception, which launched a Smithsonian-quality exhibit chronicling the history of the Herrang Dance Camp. The camp could not have succeeded without the support of Herrang, once an old mining town and now a contributor to the artistic culture of the world.

It’s easy to take the camp for granted, but the founders of Herrang have created a magical place. I have pondered the secret of Herrang: Is it the irony of an American dance camp in Sweden? Is it the chaos style of management? Perhaps a mosquito-infested small town drives people to not stop dancing? I think it’s because a bunch of talented and quirky Swedes love to dance to American jazz and they welcome anyone to share in their passion.
